Hey guess what? An actual all-ages show in Portland!

One Longfellow Square down in the old port: our best hope for young new faces?

While Portland’s music scene is vibrant and supported by a lot of great venues, one major problem has always been the lack of all-ages venues.  The Station will let kids in high school in, but it offers a limited sort of shows aiming for a very specific demographic, and so there’s little opportunity for kids not in the metal/punk/emo scene to see good local live music.  However, One Longfellow Square has been putting on some really good shows that are generally all-ages.  Hopefully kids start catching on, as getting high school-age kids interested in local music will be huge for growing Portland’s music scene.

What I actually meant to write about, however, is a show next Thursday (June 25) featuring two bands who are very near and dear to us: Feel It Robot and Lady Lamb the Beekeeper.  As you probably know, we’re heading out on a World Tour of Maine in mid-July with these two bands.  But this show will be a great way for you to preview the lineup if you don’t already know them.

lady lamb feel it robotFeel It Robot is a band from central Maine that plays a really high-energy, positive sort of pop/rock.  Their songs are almost always about either 1) taking off your pants, 2) dancing, 3) robots, 4) riding bikes, or 5) a combination of all those previous.  They’re one of my personal favorite Maine bands to see live, as they never fail to bring the fun.  They can even make Portland’s hipsters break out of the Hipster Nod into full-fledged dancin’.

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper consists of Aly Spaltro of Portland with a loop machine (previously it was a duo with her friend TJ).  This chick has more talent than almost anybody I’ve ever met.  While seeing her live makes me feel slightly inadequate as a musician and human being, I am still really stoked to see her live again.  It’s just such friggin’ good music that you can’t help but get excited.  This section of the evening will most certainly feature the Hipster Nod, but it’ll be okay because of how rad everything will be.

So, yeah.  Thursday, June 25, 8pm at One Longfellow Square in downtown Portland.  Tix are $8 in advance or $10 at the door, it’s all-ages, and I can’t recommend highly enough that you check this out.

Possibly I may be saying that before it’s officially the case, so don’t take this as gospel. I’ll confirm with Aly and update accordingly.

Checked with Aly: yeah, TJ’s leaving is official now. There hasn’t been any big announcement yet or anything, but that’s the official word.
